BUTTERFLIES AND VALENTINES

Butterflies and Valentines is a short animation about a small frog that embarks on a quest of friendship. Can this little frog brave the big, unwelcoming world long enough to find a friend?

I have chosen to base my animated film on a topic personal to me, rejection, and the fear of it. I wanted to create something on a topic that is widely overlooked and generalised. I didn't want to animate it too seriously, which is why I decided to approach this project in a humorous way. I wanted to create something lighthearted that anyone can enjoy, without needing to understand the deeper meaning, so I used frogs and wildlife to make it fun and simple.

Having a fear of rejection makes someone afraid of not fitting in, being abandoned and being alone, while struggling with low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and constant guilt. Someone with a fear of rejection is often a people-pleaser, they struggle saying no and hide their true thoughts and feelings from others. They are usually co-dependent with a fear of failure.

On my frog's journey they meet a duck swimming alone and approach it, only to be rejected. This makes the frog give up and go home immediately, regretting even trying. When they get home they lay down, dejected, when they see a cocoon hatching into a butterfly. Any other frog would eat the butterfly but my frog makes friends with it and they go outside together on an adventure, where they butterfly meets an unfortunate end. Another frog eats it. Having a fear of rejection, my frog doesn't oppose this other frog for long, after seeing the other frog is interested, they quickly forget about the butterfly and go home together.
